Changing climate and ent challenges in the uae

INTRODUCTION

Every year in the UAE, we look forward to that moment when the harsh heat slowly settles and the evenings become cooler. It feels refreshing, but in my practice I also see something else during this period. Many people start coming in with throat infections, blocked nose, sinus pressure or a sudden heaviness in the ears.

Most of us here are expats and not fully used to the sharp shift from warm weather to cold, dry air. Along with this, the overall air quality during the transition months is not always ideal. With frequent construction activity around many communities, there is a little more dust in the air than usual. All this makes the change of season a bit challenging for our airways.

In this article, I will explain why this weather shift affects ENT health, the common issues I see during this season, and simple ways to stay healthy.

WHY WEATHER CHANGE AFFECTS ENT HEALTH

When the climate moves from hot and humid to cooler and dry, the nose and throat react almost immediately. Winter months in the UAE bring:

- Dry air outdoors

- Dry air indoors from continuous AC use

- An increase in viral infections

- Constant temperature shifts between outside and inside

- Slightly higher dust levels in certain areas due to ongoing construction and windy days

Dry air reduces the natural moisture in the respiratory lining. Combined with dust and temperature changes, this weakens the airway’s protection and makes people more prone to infections, allergies and irritation.

COMMON ENT PROBLEMS DURING THE WEATHER TRANSITION

Ear Problems

- Eustachian tube blockage - Ear pressure - Middle ear infections - Increased ear issues in children after colds or flu

Nasal and Sinus Problems

- Blocked nose - Sneezing - Nasal discharge - Sinus pressure - Heaviness of head - Post-nasal drip

Throat Problems

Sore throat - Pain while swallowing - Hoarseness of voice - Throat irritation - Dryness from AC exposure

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR THE COLD SEASON

- Avoid cold air blowing directly on your face in the car or indoors - Wear a mask outdoors to reduce dust exposure - Do regular steam inhalation - Use a humidifier at home - Wash hands often to reduce viral spread - Stay well hydrated - Avoid unnecessary self medication

PEOPLE MORE VULNERABLE DURING THIS SEASON

- Children - Elderly individuals - Outdoor workers - People with allergies or chronic sinus problems

HOW ENT SPECIALISTS HELP

Many patients are unsure whether their symptoms are due to infection, allergy or dryness. A proper ENT evaluation helps in: - Identifying the root cause - Checking for sinus blockage through endoscopy - Detecting early ear involvement with basic hearing tests - Planning treatment suited for the season - Giving clear guidance on home care

DAILY CARE TIPS

- Treat cold or flu early to avoid ear blockage - Do not insert cotton buds or objects deep into the ear - Keep yourself hydrated and do steam inhalation - Warm salt-water gargles help with irritation - Use saline nasal rinses to clear the nose - Wear a scarf or earmuffs in windy places - Try yawning, swallowing or chewing gum if you feel pressure in the ears - Avoid smoke and irritants that worsen sinus symptoms

CONCLUSION

The shift from heat to cooler weather in the UAE is refreshing, but it also brings challenges for the ears, nose and throat. The mix of dry air, dust and temperature changes can trigger symptoms, especially in those who are sensitive. With simple preventive steps and timely care, most issues can be avoided. Healthy airways help you enjoy the winter season comfortably. Take care of your nose, throat and ears, and stay well throughout the changing weather.
